Janam Pregnancy Care App
Aims: To gather robust user feedback about the app’s functionality, ease of use, practicality, cultural sensitivity.
About: Many South Asian women face barriers in accessing appropriate maternal healthcare due to language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of tailored information. Traditional healthcare resources may not always be as effective, leading to gaps in care and support. The Janam app addresses these issues by offering a platform that speaks directly to the cultural and linguistic needs of South Asian women, ensuring they receive relevant, comprehensive, and respectful information throughout their pregnancy and postnatal journey. The goal is to improve health outcomes and provide empowering support in a culturally competent manner.
Delivery: Research carried out between February and December 2023, with South Asian women. Structured interviews with participants purposefully sampled from different ethnic groups, comprising respective language cohorts.
Outputs: A pregnancy care app for mobile phones, available in five South Asian languages (Urdu, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, English).
Initiative: Funded by Health Innovation East Midlands, as part of the Digital Health Accelerator Programme.
